2 story above grade 12,000 SF addition over existing Amtrak tunnels requiring complex foundation coordination; multiple easement agreements; new ambulance driveway and parking lot; post Super Storm Sandy major infrastructure relocation from cellar level to first floor; 26,000 SF multi-phased interior renovation.
This project entailed the phased gut renovation of the existing Emergency Department and a 12,000 SF addition. The project tripled the size of existing department and included: fast-track radiology equipment (CT’s, MRI); dedicated psychiatric intake units; trauma and specialized cardiac care rooms. The building addition was located on the existing ambulance parking lot and was constructed on a compressed site bordered by existing buildings and the ventilation tower for the Amtrak tunnels below. The site contained major city infrastructure, including sewers, ConEd electrical feeders, and Verizon telecommunications cabling. Deep foundations for the new structure required significant coordination and approvals. The first phase of the project was underway when Superstorm Sandy affected the campus resulting in catastrophic damage to the existing ED. The project underwent significant re-design to address future flood mitigation, including the relocation of the project’s entire MEP infrastructure. Program/project management services included the planning, design, and construction administration for the new addition, and for renovations to the existing facility. In addition, LPE managed the regulatory, community board, BSA and NYSDOH CON approval process, and assisted in maintaining compliance with various grants and philanthropic efforts.
